About the Institute

Mission

The Ocean Literacy Institute helps young people understand the ocean as a connected system, and their own place and power within it.

Our Founder

Mike Hawkins is an author, keynote speaker, adventure athlete, rescue diver, and systems thinker who has spent more than four decades in and around the ocean. Before founding the Institute, he worked as a technology governance, risk, and compliance professional, and he is the author of five technology books published by Prentice Hall. He writes the Ocean Adventures with Mike books and assigns their rights to the Institute.

Why an Institute

An institute can outlast any one person. We’re building an organization rooted in educators, scientists, and communities, so the work continues and grows long after any single book or founder.

Advisers

Our advisory board is forming, with seats for marine science, ocean literacy education, curriculum and standards, evaluation, early childhood, school leadership, nonprofit governance, and child safeguarding. Names will be added with permission as advisors confirm.

Leadership

Our Commitments

The work belongs to the Institute. Our books, curriculum, and framework are owned by the Ocean Literacy Institute.

Conflicts are disclosed. Our founder also leads other organizations. Our conflict-of-interest policy keeps them separate, and related-party transactions are reported publicly.

Children’s safety comes first. Everyone who works with students is screened and trained.

We report honestly, including results that fall short.
